Static/Manual IP Configuration

Steps for switching from a Dynamic (DHCP) IP configuration to a Static/Manual IP configuration.

Information To Gather:

To fully set up a static/manual network configuration you will need information about your existing Wi-Fi or ethernet connection.

Please gather this information before changing your terminal's settings to a manual network:

1. Network Name (aka SSID)
2. Network Security Type (usually WPA/WPA2 PSK)
3. Network Password
4. Network IP Address Range (192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.x)
5. Network Subnet Mask
6. Network Gateway Address

If you have a network administrator or team that manages your network please contact them for setting up a static ip address.

The Zift Support team can assist with some temporary network information if your terminal has been able to connect to the Zift environment before.

Accessing the Wi-Fi Settings:

Navigate to the Android terminal settings. The Icon looks like:

settings-button-only

It is usually found either on the terminal desktop or in the 'Tools' folder found on the terminal desktop.

Select the 'Wireless & Network' settings or 'Wi-Fi' menu option:

open-wi-fi-menu-android-ui

Scroll to the bottom of the list of available Wi-Fi connections if needed to find the '+ Add network' button:

terminal-add-network-button

Static/Manual Network Configuration:

On the 'Add Network' page please add the following configurations:

  • Network Name: Choose a name (suggested: same as your primary Wi-Fi + '-manual' at the end - Example: 'My-network-manual').
  • Security: Select WPA/WPA2 PSK (or your actual network security type).
  • Password: Enter your Wi-Fi password.

Expand the 'Advanced Options':

  • Change the IP settings from DHCP to Static.
Important Note: The example below is based on a generic network config. This will need to be adjusted based on your local network settings. Zift support can assist with getting the necessary information - See other notes below regarding your specific network settings.
    • IP Address: 192.168.1.240 (If your network uses 192.168.1.x - see Below for more details)
    • Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    • Network prefix length: 24
    • DNS 1: 8.8.8.8 (Google)
    • DNS 2: 8.8.4.4 (Google)
      • Alternative Public DNS
        • 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare)
        • 9.9.9.9 (Quad9)
    • Review settings & tap 'Save' at the top right to save the settings
      • terminal-add-manual-network-save-button

If the password and other settings were correct you will see the 'Connected' message next to your new manually added network

example-connected-wi-fi

If the password and other settings were not correct and you receive an error message:

  • please double check the password is entered correctly
  • The Network settings are correct for your Wi-Fi or ethernet network.
  • If you have been able to connect to the Zift environment previously you can contact Zift Support to see if they can assist with a temporary network configuration.
Important Notes For Network Configuration:

Ip Address Collision:

The static/manual configuration conflicts with typical DHCP(Automatic) ip address assignment. The assigned ip address needs to not be assigned to any other devices on the network. We recommend '240' as it is near the end of the address block, but its availability is contingent upon the number of devices on your network and that no other devices are already assigned to this IP address.  If you find that it is not working you can try other ip addresses between 3-253 (example 192.168.1.200, 192.168.1.150, etc.)

Network Prefix Length (aka subnet mask):

Most networks will use a default private ip address block like 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x. For networks like these or similar your network prefix length will be 24 (subnet mask 255.255.255.0).

Your network configuration may be unique or may be using a 10.x.x.x configuration - network prefix length 8 (subnet mask 255.0.0.0).

Contact Zift support if needed to figure out your network prefix length.

Network Complexity:

Please note that your network configuration may be unique if you have a tech. department or network administrator. If you do have a network administrator please ask them to assign your static ip address on the network device, and to provide you with the 'static ip', 'network prefix length', 'Gateway' information.

If they have questions or need to know why this is needed Zift support will be happy to provide any details and discussions.
